The "Pro Move": Standard Ticket vs. Dubrovnik Pass
This is where most travelers get confused. You have two main ways to enter:
1. The Official Site Ticket (Best for flexibility)
If you buy via the official City Walls website, your ticket is valid for 72 hours. However, it is a one-admission, one-lap policy, which means you are only allowed to visit each site once, and cannot return or use the ticket again on the same site.
- Why this matters: You don't have to do everything at once. You can walk the main walls Monday, then visit Fort St. Lawrence or the Minčeta Tower on Tuesday. Just keep in mind, you cannot re-enter any of those sites once you leave.
2. The Dubrovnik Pass (Best for value)
For the same 40€, the Dubrovnik Pass includes the walls PLUS entry to museums and a 24-hour bus pass.
- The Catch: Unlike the official ticket, the one-day Pass is strictly a 24-hour window for the walls. Once you scan it at the first fort, the clock starts ticking!
PRO-TIP: If you plan on visiting even one museum in addition to the walls, buy the Dubrovnik Pass. It costs the same as the wall ticket (40€) but includes the bus and several top attractions for free.
What exactly is included?
Your ticket isn’t just for a walk; it’s an all-access pass to the city’s defense system:
- The Main City Walls (The full 2km loop).
- Fort of St. Lawrence (Lovrjenac): The "Gibraltar of Dubrovnik."
- Minčeta Tower & the Foundry Museum: The highest point of the walls.
- Fort Bokar & the Western Outer Wall.
DON'T DOUBLE PAY: If you visit Fort St. Lawrence (Lovrjenac) first, keep your ticket! You can show it at the City Walls entrance later that day to deduct the price you already paid from the full wall ticket.
Where to enter (And which entrance to avoid!)
There are three ways up, but they aren't created equal:
1. The Main Entrance (Pile Gate): Located by the Big Onofrio's Fountain.
- Verdict: Avoid if possible. It has the steepest stairs and the longest lines.
2. The "Insider" Entrance (Ploče Gate): Located on the eastern side of the Old Town.
- Verdict: Our favorite. Fewer crowds and a much gentler start to your climb.
3. The Maritime Museum Entrance (St. John’s Fort): Tucked away in the southeastern corner.
- Verdict: Great if you’re already exploring the harbor area.
LOCAL SECRET: Avoid the main Pile Gate entrance! Head over to the Ploče Gate (East entrance). The lines are significantly shorter, and you’ll start your walk with a much more gradual climb.
The three golden rules for the walls:
- One Lap Only: Your ticket allows for one entry and one full circuit. If you step down into the city for a coffee, you cannot re-enter with the same ticket!
- The "Secret" Area: To see the separate Minčeta Tower and the western bulwark, head to the northwestern corner of the city. It’s a climb, but this part of the walls is less touristy and more peaceful, away from the crowds.
- Beat the Heat: In the summer, we highly recommend going as early as possible (usually 8:00 AM) or late in the afternoon to avoid the cruise ship crowds and the midday sun.
